San Martin Bakery and Cafe - Latin America in Uptown

This bright and airy dining area will transport you to Central America!

San Martin Bakery and Cafe came to Dallas in December of 2018, but don’t think of this place as new. There’s years of experience that comes with this place. Originally opened in Guatemala in 1974, this family-owned business has over 40 locations in Latin America. The location in Uptown is their first in the United States, however. And, thank goodness they came!

Whether you are coming for baked goods, breakfast, lunch or dinner, you will not be disappointed. In fact, the only disappointing thing about your experience will be trying to find a parking space and the wait for a table. Luckily, the complimentary valet service can help you with the parking. And, the bakery will definitely help you with the wait.

Let’s see the sweets!

Sweets abound! So much to choose from!

In addition to full size cakes and pies, there’s an assortment of individually sized desserts just screaming to be eaten. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough hours in the day, or calories to spare to try them all. But, whatever you choose in the bakery, you won’t be disappointed.

Pick what you want, fill your basket and enjoy!

I’ll just have one of these, and one of those…

Besides the delicacies under the glass, there is an open area that is self-serve. Just grab a set of tongs and a basket and fill it to your heart’s delight. You can even order a mimosa from the cashier to enjoy while you wait for your table. And, be sure to stop by the bar in the corner to order a coffee, made from Guatemalan beans roasted by San Martin’s own roastery.

Be sure to stop by the Coffee Bar, while you wait.

Eventually, you’ll tear yourself away from the bakery. And once seated, you are treated to an extensive menu featuring some amazing traditional Guatemalan fare. Like the Dobladas Breakfast with corn tortillas, filled with eggs and ranchera sauce, paired with plantains and refried beans. Or, the Chilaquiles – eggs served with shredded chicken, tortilla chips, melted cheese, sour cream, onion and cilantro. Both come with an artisan bread basket. Mixed in with the Latin dishes, you will also find some European influence, as well. The menu features both Italian and French inspired meals, too. And, my absolutely favorite part about San Martin, is that their menu has pictures for everything!! Why can’t every restaurant do this?

No matter what you choose, it will be delicious.

In the end, Dallas is fortunate to have so many amazing culturally-specific restaurants! And, it speaks volumes that an international powerhouse like San Martin chose this market for its US debut. Count your blessings and keep up the patronage people, because the rewards are sweet, indeed!
