COVID-19 Special Edition - Things you can still do! (updated) - DFW Weekend

(UPDATE: The Big Bend Chamber of Commerce has closed campgrounds and lodging. So, we are striking that recommendation.

These are very strange times, indeed. So, with the prospect of nearly everything in the Metroplex being closed, we are hard pressed to recommend places to go during this period of “Social Distancing.” We believe firmly in limiting your social interactions during this current pandemic. So, what are you supposed to do besides stare at your 4 walls? Luckily, there are still options.

I’m hungry, what’s up?

Some drive-thru’s are still open! (Photo by PxHere)

Even though restaurants are closing down their seating areas to help slow the spread of the virus, those with a drive-thru are typically still serving their menu via the window. Other’s are offering take-out service only, and most are still using services like GrubHub, Uber Eats or PostNotes. Please check the websites of your favorites food places before venturing out!

OK, but I really need toilet paper!

Many grocery stores are doing their best to keep shelves stocked.

So, there has been a run on TP, and you didn’t get yours in time? Don’t panic, and please don’t buy all the toilet paper when you do get your hands on some. Seriously though, going to a grocery store is considered medium risk because you can still come into contact with people who are potentially infected. So, if you do have to go out, be smart and minimize contact.

And remember, you should try shopping early in the morning, because many retailers like Wal-Mart will be reducing store hours to restock overnight. Also, major grocery stores do offer pick up services or even delivery. You can alto try your local dollar store if you’re not too picky about the brands you buy. Try the local Asian market. Sadly, many people are avoiding them because of irrational associations about the origins of the virus. But, if you’re so desperate for toilet paper, perhaps you can get over your ridiculous fears.

I have to get out of my house!

So, is it the family that’s driving you crazy? Finished binge watching your favorite show, already? Whatever it is, it’s time to get out of the house. The good news is, we’re not dealing with the scary airborne zombie-making virus that you just saw in that Netflix movie you just watched. It’s safe to get outside and go for a walk. Again, be cordial if you see your neighbors, just maintain a safe distance and don’t shake hands! But, a wave and a smile will go a long way.

There are other options too. As of the moment that I’m typing this, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is still open. Just follow that link on their name to get the latest updates about closings and restrictions.

I did reach out to the Trinity River Audubon Center to see if they were still open. They said that they would have reduced hours but may consider shutting down. Visit their site or their Facebook page for the latest. (UPDATE: They have closed)

There are plenty of great places to walk around.

But, if that just seems like a hassle, just Google “trail” and find somewhere nice to walk around in your neighborhood. We live in a beautiful city, go check it out.

Or better yet, go on a road trip if you Spring Break plans got cancelled. Avoid metropolitan areas and get back to nature. Tin Valley Retro Rentals just posted on their Facebook page that they have 90 acres of fresh air for you to go explore. If they book up, try another camp ground. Check out our Big Bend post for some ideas.

Good luck out there!

Whatever you decide to do, use your head. Avoid public places. Remember, it’s not just about your health, it’s about stopping the spread of this virus. Do your part! Good luck DFW.
