Dallas Grilled Cheese Co. – Grilled cheese re-imagined!

Tucked away in the Bishop Arts District, something cheesy is going on.

We journeyed to the Bishop Arts District in search of the ultimate comfort food, the grilled cheese sandwich. And who better to provide that, than a restaurant named after the sandwich itself. Opened in 2015, this magnificent little gem strives to redefine what can be called a grilled cheese sandwich. Gone are your preconceived notions of simple white bread and American cheese. This is replaced with much more adventurous and innovative concoctions made of brisket, muenster and gouda. Although, we should note, that the Classic grilled cheese is also available if you aren’t willing to venture outside of your comfort zone.

We should start by saying this…If you haven’t visited the Bishop Arts District, what are you waiting for? Many of us who live in Dallas have had strong opinions of what the Oak Cliff area represents. It often comes across as a much neglected part of Dallas, high in crime and wrought with poverty. And while this struggle still exists in many of Dallas’ suburbs, some areas are working hard to turn things around. The Bishop Arts District of Oak Cliff is one such area. And, it’s up to all of us to visit these areas and support the local businesses that are working hard to provide opportunities there.

Tucked away, but worth the search

The entrance is a bit hidden. But, keep looking. You will be happy that you did.

Thankfully, we arrived in Bishop Arts with one thing on our mind, to visit the Dallas Grilled Cheese Co. and experience a proper grilled cheese sandwich. Because, finding this place by happenstance would be very difficult to accomplish. The entrance is tucked away along the side of a building, past several other local shops. But, a beautiful brick exterior and large patio greet you upon your arrival. And, something about the classy exterior conveys that you are on the verge of experiencing something special.

You know what goes great with grilled cheese sandwiches? Yep, alcohol.

One thing about the exterior sign struck us as odd, though. It read “Dallas Grilled Cheese. Co” with the period after the word “Cheese” instead of behind the word “Co.” It wasn’t until we realized that this matches their web address is dallasgrilledcheese.co that we realized how truly clever it is.

A grilled cheese by any other name…

There were three of us along for the ride, this time. And our cravings were so far apart, it couldn’t have worked out better. One person saw a sign that said Macaroni and Cheese and immediately decided to abandon getting a grilled cheese sandwich, altogether. The other wanted to stick with a traditional bread and cheese sandwich, but a little more experimental. While I wanted to have a sandwich that had a bit of meat in it.

  • So much to choose from! What to do, what to do?

As we perused the variety of dishes, we discovered that not only was there a bowl of Mac and Cheese, but there was a Grilled Mac ‘N Cheese sandwich on the menu! Our Macaroni and Cheese outsider was now back in sandwich game! Our traditionalist decided on The Favorite (Parmesan-crusted grilled sourdough with American, cheddar and Gruyère cheeses, crumbled bacon and Dijon mustard), while I set my sights on The Cubanesque (Grilled sourdough, roasted pork, sliced ham, Swiss, spicy Dijon mustard and pickles). We threw in a side of Tomato Basil soup, and went to town!

Probably not the grilled cheese sandwich you grew up with. And, that’s a good thing!

All three sandwiches were amazing! The Grilled Mac and Cheese was probably the most flavorful out of the three. It burst with cheesiness and offered a truly unique experience that had up until that moment, had eluded my taste-buds my whole life. The Favorite was definitely a more traditional sandwich, but when paired with the Tomato Basil soup, became a more complete and well-rounded experience. The Cubanesque met all my expectations. It was a well put together sandwich that delivered on taste and satisfied my appetite.

Grilled cheese, done right

Dallas Grilled Cheese Co. delivered three amazing takes on what a grilled cheese sandwich can be. We look forward to visiting again in the future. Hopefully, next time we will also give the fully stocked bar and their tempting desserts a shot, as well! Dallas Grilled Cheese Co. offers two locations to serve Dallas. The original that we visited in the Bishop Arts District and a second location near SMU at Mockingbird Station. We encourage you to check them out.

And hey, if grilled cheese isn’t your thing, check out our earlier review of Taqueria La Ventana. Maybe street tacos will soothe your cravings. 🙂
